Periodic visual checks (from the ground or with binoculars, and occasionally by a qualified person on the roof) remain useful.
Integrated solar-roof products combine the weather surface and the generating surface. Their maintenance needs are specific to the product; the key is following the manufacturer’s guidance rather than treating the roof like ordinary shingles.

In most climates, rain does a reasonable job of cleaning panels. In dusty, pollen-heavy, agricultural, or low-rain areas, production can drop noticeably between cleanings. Leaves, needles, and bird droppings create hot spots and shading that a remote production monitor will eventually flag. Cleaning is not constant work, but it is not zero work either. Decide in advance whether you will hire periodic cleaning or handle safe ground-accessible methods yourself. Walking on panels or using improper tools can damage the glass and void warranties.
Inverters and monitoring
String inverters and microinverters have finite lifespans and known failure patterns. Monitoring apps make it easier to spot a drop in production early. The maintenance reality is that someone needs to look at the data occasionally and know what a normal seasonal variation looks like versus a genuine fault. Inverter replacement is a normal mid-life event for many systems; budget and planning for it is more realistic than assuming the original unit lasts the full life of the panels.
Vegetation and shading
Trees grow. A system that was unshaded at installation can lose production as nearby limbs fill in. Periodic pruning is a maintenance item that belongs on the same long-term list as the roof and the electrical equipment.
What “maintenance-free” usually means in practice
Sales language sometimes implies that once the system is turned on, there is nothing left to do. In reality:
Monitoring should be checked at least a few times a year.
Physical inspection of the roof, flashings, and array is wise every few years or after major storms.
Cleaning frequency depends on your local environment.
Inverter health and any service bulletins from the manufacturer should be tracked.
Warranty registration, documentation, and claim procedures should stay accessible.
The system does not need constant hands-on care. It does need occasional deliberate attention so that small issues do not become roof leaks or prolonged production losses.
Who does the work years later
This is the part that is easy to overlook at installation time. The original solar installer may still be in business and responsive. They may also have shifted markets, changed ownership, or deprioritized service work. Roofing companies that performed a combined project may or may not want to return for small flashing repairs under an active array.
Before the project is complete, clarify:
Who to call for roof issues versus solar production issues.
Whether the installer offers a service plan or preferred-rate future visits.
How warranty claims are initiated and what documentation is required.
What happens if the original company is no longer available; which warranties are still manufacturer-backed and transferable.

Insurance and storm seasons
After year one, the maintenance reality includes staying current with your insurer on the presence and ownership status of the system. After hail or high-wind events, prompt documentation and notice to the relevant parties (insurer, roofer, solar company) remain important. The same boundary questions that existed at installation—who owns a leak at a penetration, who pays for removal and reinstallation if the roof is damaged—still apply, only now the equipment is older and the original crews may be harder to reach.
A practical maintenance rhythm

Monthly or quarterly: Glance at the monitoring app for unexpected production drops.
After major storms: Visual check from the ground for missing panels, damaged racking, or obvious roof debris.
Every 1–3 years (or as local conditions require): Professional or careful cleaning if soiling is significant; roof and array inspection focusing on flashings, penetrations, and any signs of wear.
As needed: Vegetation management and prompt response to monitoring alerts or visible problems.
Ongoing: Keep documents and warranty contacts current; note inverter age so replacement is planned rather than emergency.

A solar roof after year one is not fragile, but it is not invisible either. The roof still needs to shed water. The array still needs reasonable cleanliness and working electronics. The interface between the two still needs intact flashings and clear responsibility lines. Most of the required attention is modest and infrequent. The systems that cause regret are usually the ones that received no attention at all until a leak or a multi-month production loss forced the issue.
